Albin Lhota

December 16th, 1847 - March 19th, 1889
Born on December 16th, 1847 in Kunratice, Lhota focused on capturing landscapes from the Moravian countryside. From 1863 to 1867 he studied painting at the Prague Academy of Art. Lhota was able to capture the essence and atmosphere of his subjects, which ranged from the rural landscapes of Moravia to the figures that inhabited it. He was largely aligned with early Atmospheric/Impressionist movements. Lhota lived in abject poverty and often painted on cardboard and boards. He exhibited with the Artistic Discussion or Umelecka beseda in the 1880’s. His landscape work was widely praised by his contemporaries and he is remembered as a thoughtful, impactful artist within the historical Czech art canon.
