Introduction
Uprka was deeply interested in depicting both the everyday lives of Moravian folk and their special occasions and celebrations. Most prominently, Uprka depicted the pilgrimage of St. Anthony which continues to take place at the Baroque pilgrimage chapel in Blatnice pod Svatým Antonínkem, Czechia. The chapel continues to act as a significant pilgrimage destination where thousands gather annually to pray to Saint Anthony of Padua. Uprka’s depictions of groups and individuals wearing traditional Moravian costuming and celebrating outside on lush fields are iconic to the Czech art historical canon.
Uprka also depicted a festival in Vlčnov, Czechia called “The Ride of Kings.” Within this Moravian festival, groups of young men ride through the village on horseback in elaborate, traditional costumes. It is believed the tradition originated after the king of Bohemia defeated a Hungarian king in war. The festival holds a place on the UNESCO world heritage list.
